MORNING POEM

Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder.
Help someone's soul heal.
Walk out of your house like a shepherd.

WINTER GIFTS

To Art Friends Everywhere!  Those of you who have been with me a long time know I send out the same holiday greeting every year.  The original of this painting was "adopted" by some very prolific art collectors years ago and still resides in a lovely home here in Taos.  The street in this painting is the main street in Truchas -- I walked to the post office from my little adobe house every day and still keep the memories of that special time very close.  The woman is the memory I've kept of my little Polish grandmother -- she carried a shopping bag with her everywhere -- those were her "gifts" her "surprises".  The words of Fra Giovanni never fail to uplift - especially at this time of the year.  From my heart I wish you all the best of this holiday season -- Hug someone special today!  Sincere best wishes, Donna

"There  is nothing I can give you which you have not;
But there is much, very much that while I cannot give it,
 you can take.

No heaven can come to us unless our hearts
find rest in today.  TAKE HEAVEN.
No peace lies in the future which is not hidden
in this present moment.  TAKE PEACE.

The gloom of the world is but a shadow.
Behind it, yet within reach is joy.
There is a radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see,
and to see we have only to look.  I BESEECH YOU TO LOOK.

Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by
their covering, cast them away as ugly, or heavy or hard.
Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it
a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom with power.

Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that
brings it to you.  Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or
a duty, believe me that angel's hand is there; the gift is there,
and the wonder of an overshadowing presence.
Our joys, too, be not content with them as joys.
They, too, conceal diviner gifts.

And so, at this time, I greet you.
Not quite as the world sends greetings, but with
profound esteem and with the prayer that for you now and
forever, the day breaks, and the shadows flee away."

Fra Giovanni, 1513 AD

EARLY SNOW CLOUDS AT PICURIS PUEBLO - Archival Giclee

GIVING THANKS TODAY!

"The images of peace are ephemeral. The language of peace is subtle. The reasons for peace, the definitions of peace, the very idea of peace have to be invented, and invented again.

Children, everybody, here's what to do during war: In a time of destruction, create something. A poem. A parade. A community. A school. A vow. A moral principle. One peaceful moment."

—From THE FIFTH BOOK OF PEACE, Maxine Hong Kingston

24"x96" PEDERNAL - WORK IN PROGRESS (THE GLAZES)

8/23/11 - PEDERNAL - 24"x96" Original Oil on Belgian Linen.  Work in Progress - The Glazes.  This is a diptych - the canvases are put together now so that I can have uniform colors in the glazes between the two canvases.  I previously said I would work on these canvases separately and discovered that is not an option.  Will work with both canvases on the easel and then I can bounce the colors back and forth between the canvases for a more uniform color quality.  DC

"Forward and backward I have gone, and for me it has been an immense journey..... Perhaps there is no meaning in it at all, the thought went on inside me, save that of the journey itself, so far as men can see.  It has altered with the chances of life, and the chances brought us here; but it was a journey -- long, perhaps -- but a good journey under a pleasant sun.  Do not look for the purpose.  Loren Eiseley,  Naturalist - THE IMMENSE JOURNEY.

THE OPEN ROAD! Field work for new paintings

14 April 2011 -- Finished the Rio Chama painting late last month - varnished, framed it and sent it off to it's new home in Cambria, California on Monday.  Spent the rest of Monday and most of Tuesday feeling "post-ARTum" blues.  Took off in search of orchards with apple blossoms -- about a week too early.  Wandered for most of the day.  These past two weeks have gathered much new material -- planning some large canvases - new "environments" - am very excited.  I LOVE large blank canvases -- like reading a long book that you can't put down!  Also planning to add some new smaller auction paintings.  To receive my Studio Newsletter with the latest paintings, send your e.address via the sign-up on this page.  I will be happy to send you photos of my new work!  ENJOY!  DC
