WINTER GIFTS......

To Art Friends Everywhere!  Many of you have been with me a long time and know I love to send this greeting every year.  The original of this painting was "adopted" by some great friends and very prolific art collectors years ago and still resides in a lovely home in Taos.  The street in this painting is the main street in Truchas -- I walked to the post office from my little adobe house every day and still keep the memories of that special time and place very close.  The woman is the memory I've kept of my little Polish grandmother -- she carried a shopping bag with her everywhere -- those were her "gifts" her "surprises".  The words of Fra Giovanni never fail to uplift - especially at this time of the year.  From my heart I wish each and every one of you all the best of this holiday season -- Hug someone special today!  Sincere best wishes, Donna - Tesuque, New Mexico - 12/20/13

"There  is nothing I can give you which you have not;
But there is much, very much that while I cannot give it,
 you can take.

No heaven can come to us unless our hearts
find rest in today.  TAKE HEAVEN.
No peace lies in the future which is not hidden
in this present moment.  TAKE PEACE.

The gloom of the world is but a shadow.
Behind it, yet within reach is joy.
There is a radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see,
and to see we have only to look.  I BESEECH YOU TO LOOK.

Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by
their covering, cast them away as ugly, or heavy or hard.
Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it
a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom with power.

Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that
brings it to you.  Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or
a duty, believe me that angel's hand is there; the gift is there,
and the wonder of an overshadowing presence.
Our joys, too, be not content with them as joys.
They, too, conceal diviner gifts.

And so, at this time, I greet you.
Not quite as the world sends greetings, but with
profound esteem and with the prayer that for you now and
forever, the day breaks, and the shadows flee away."

Fra Giovanni, 1513 AD

OUR DAILY BREAD.....

OUR DAILY BREAD (Taos Pueblo, New Mexico)

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."
- Melody Beattie

A very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving to family and friends everywhere!  Best regards, Donna

STUDIO NO. 2113 - HARVEST MOON RISING - 30"x40" Work in Progress (The Glazes) - Glazes are transparent or semi-transparent colors thinned with painting medium and worked into the underpainting.  Trees:  Combinations of Chrome Oxide Green Opaque, Yellow Ochre, Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna and Cadmium Red.  Sky:  Ultramarine Blue, Violet Lake, Thalo Red Rose and Yellow Ochre Transparent.  Because there is turpentine in painting medium, the glazes have to dry before going in with the opaque colors.

TAOS SUNRISE - 36"x36" Work in Progress (Opaque Colors)

STUDIO NO. 2013 - TAOS SUNRISE - 36"x36" Work in Progress (Opaque Colors) - Worked on this canvas all week and dropped the idea of using only five colors.  Added Cadmium Yellow Light to the area where the sun is rising and will add some dry brush Holbein Rose Grey to the sky next week.  Also added some Burnt Sienna and Alizarin to the grasses and trees.  The paint is laid on rather thickly and needs to dry before I can work to bring out the early morning light.  This is not a New Beginning as I thought when I blocked it in - it is the last painting from my kitchen window on Santistevan Lane -- that makes it very special in my eyes.  Hope you are enjoying this process.  DC

Hello from Tesuque!  Wow!  What an adventure so far!  A real monsoon season this year with hellacious thunderstorms - wind, hail - just everything!  Exciting - especially when the rain came through the roof in five different places - towels, buckets -- just short of having to get out the life preserver.  Phone and internet out for two days.  Roof repair this week sometime.  Went back to the  easel the next day as though nothing happened -- nothing monotonous around here; that's for sure!  Starting to  photograph the views from my Tesuque windows and will head down the road apiece this weekend - I love the little street sign that says "Margaritaville" along the dirt road.  Had a good time making this painting - it is for sale through my Online Gallery/Store and will be displayed on website Collector's Gallery - ENJOY!

9"x12" NEW ORIGINAL OIL "DEEP RIVER DREAMS"

NEW - DEEP RIVER DREAMS -  9"X12" Oil on Canvas, silver/gold frame  with Linen Liner.  Click here to preview/purchase.

One of my all-time favorite books is QUERENCIA by Stephen Bodio -- The word doesn't translate.  It is used  in Spanish to designate that mysterious little area in the bullring that catches the fancy of the fighting bull when he charges in.  He imagines it his sanctuary: when parked there, he supposes he cannot be hurt. . . So it is, borrowing the term, that one can speak of one's "querencia" to mean
that little, unspecified area in life where one feels, safe, serene.  William F. Buckley, RACING THROUGH  PARADISE

My first sight after crossing the border into New Mexico in 1967 was that long, straight stretch of highway out of Tucumcari. Off in the distance and moving toward the car was a huge black storm cloud with a column of midnight blue rain pouring from it. Later I learned that the Native Americans call this phenomena "Walking Rain". I was a big city girl with three babies, six month twin girls and a two year old son, on a mattress in the back seat of the car and I was heading to the rest of my life on this alien planet called New Mexico.

Forty-six years later, I believe that the quality of my life and my work are inextricably bound to the  spirit of this place and its people. My visits to Mexico and Guatemala elicit the same excitement and curiosity.  It has always been my intention that the paintings exude the same wonderful mixture of the past and the present through color and texture.

Gratefully I have found that "unspecified area in life" where I feel safe and serene - peace. Those accidental twists and turns have brought significant changes in my life.  It is so easy to resist that "Senda Desconocido" (The Path Unknown); with just a little courage one can head the pick-up truck down another unfamiliar dirt road.

PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION....YET!

Hello from Tesuque!  A lovely and most welcome drenching rain this afternoon -- just when we thought that moisture was a figment of our imaginations, the Rain Gods smiled on us!  Longtime Art Friend Dr. David Reagan of Texas suggested I send photos of my new place - here they are.  Just getting started again -- yes, that is a worktable in the kitchen area - underpainting some 6"x8"s - new underpaintings large and small on the easel.  Finally working my way through the new Photoshop CS6 software - not quite there yet.  Why do they take something so simple and easy to use as CS2 and complicate it beyond my frail capabilities? Still have a little workroom off to the side of the office that needs some TLC - unpack more boxes, put out my music - organize the chaos.

My plan is to begin posting some small auction pieces around the 9th of next month - working on some lovely medium underpaintings -- it all seems so new -- set out new paints again today -- I fall in love with linseed oil and turpentine all over again!  Waiting for one more standing light for the easel paintings - having to learn some things as though for the first time.

Oh, almost forgot - found this gem on Facebook today - an article that states that more art is now being sold online than in galleries!  -- Hot off the easel!  It pays for every artist to know how to use a computer!  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23054641

Just beginning to rebuild my inventory and plan to post my progress to this blog on a regular basis --  should be very interesting!  Stay tuned!  Send e.mail address to receive Studio Newsletter - previews of new paintings and prints.

Best regards, Donna

New Photoshop, computer upgrade, new studio arrangement, unfamiliar surroundings - strangeness -- unfamiliar lighting on palette and easel - the word for the Day is ADAPT!!
