BACK TO BASICS: A TONED GROUND - GESSOING

Starting from the Beginning - again! Friend Carol pitched in to help gesso canvases in preparation to paint - behind the scenes studio work - the part that no one sees or considers when looking at a finished painting! GESSO RECIPE: Gesso, Payne's Grey - enough color to create a toned ground. If necessary, thin with water so that coats do not leave heavy brush marks on canvas. Dry thoroughly between each coat. Mix in coffee can - enough for two or three coats to cover canvas. Seal up remainder and put in fridge to keep for next use.
