This is the second phase of this painting -- to view the Underpainting, go to my blog entry of November 30th. Here I have combined both opaque and transparent colors -- as bright and as brilliant (and also as dark) as I possibly could. The dark mountains are a combination of Prussian Blue and Mars Black. The foreground darks are Prussian Blue, Dioxazine Purple - Chrome Oxide Green Opaque. The cloudy sky Prussian Blue, Mars Black and Permalba White.

Oh yes, I "threw" in some Cadmium Red in the trees (Cadmium Yellow and Yellow Ochre) just for the heck of it!

It's a cold and snowy day here in Taos -- a fire in the woodstove in the studio - getting down to some serious winter work. The second phase of this painting are the glazes and some middle tones in the sky. Sky -- I glazed the underpainting (see previous post) with Transparent Gold Ochre and Thalo Red Rose -- then "scumbled" (pushed the opaque colors into the glazes while they were wet) in some Permalba White and Cadmium Yellow - Ochres and Cadmium Red for the highest lights -- and moved into the shadow areas with Paynes Grey and my blue sky color. The lower half of the painting -- I have put in the glazes -- dark colors - See my Palette Set up on this page. Now this canvas needs to dry for about a week -- stay tuned!

(UNDERPAINTING - 20"x30" Orig. Oil on Fine Artist's Canvas)

Color sketch over a "toned ground" - the canvas is covered with two to four layers of gesso mixed with Payne's Grey. This mixture can be thinned (one part water to two or three parts gesso) so that the interstices of the canvas are filled and create a smoother painting surface. For more texture, tone the gesso, but don't add water.

The "color sketch" -- a loose version of the finished painting is done using colors mixed with M-G White or Foundation White. Important to see "underneath" the colors of the completed painting -- this phase of the painting shines through the glazes and even the middle tones and final opaque highlights.

About a week ago I posted a photo of the underpainting of this work -- This post shows you the second phase of this process -- laying in the darkest darks -- the glazes. Glazes are transparent or semi-transparent colors -- the light is still refracted through these colors from the underpainting, giving the paint "life". Instead of black, two of my favorite mixtures are Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna and sometimes I add Alizarin Crimson to this mix. Another of my favorite "warm" dark color mixtures is Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Coming soon: the middle tones and final highlights.
