One of the things I truly love about painting is the freedom I have to create my own reality-- to change an image -- "pentimento" -- to paint over what I thought was good two days or two weeks ago. Am almost embarrassed that I looked at siesta in grey for almost three years before it became "Siesta in Red" (see blog archived photo July 21st at http://donnaclair.blogspot.com). It finally became the painting I always hoped it could be.

26 October 2008 -- Had a great time with this painting and all the while I sat at the easel, I had the feeling I was just holding the brush -- that the canvas almost painted itself! When I gathered the material for this piece, I stood high above the valley on the Rim Road -- and somehow when I look at this painting I have the feeling that I am "floating above" the landscape. Have decided that this completed canvas will be the "study" for a 48"x36" canvas. ENJOY! -- DC

21 October 2008 -- Have had a great time working into this painting with the glazes. The fields are a combination of Mars Orange, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and some Chrome Oxide Green Opaque. The Trees: A combination of Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna and some Cadmium Orange in the highlights. I have the idea that this might make a great LARGE PAINTING!!!! Stay tuned! DC

YELLOW MUMS - Underpainting

14 October 2008 --YELLOW MUMS --28"x22" Oil on Belgian Linen. Here is the first underpainting of my winter work. It's raining today -- chilly, cold -- know it's snowing on Taos Mountain.....Just thought I'd start out with something bright and cheerful. The colors are mixed with fast-drying Foundation White -- highlights on the flowers - Cadmium Yellow Light, then Cad. Yellow Medium - down to Ochre and then a dirty brush mixed with Diox. Purple. The background is Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and Cobalt Blue. This canvas will have to dry for about ten days before I can work into it with the glazes. Stay tuned! -- DC

9 October 2008 -- Yep, winter is a comin' and my supply of paints, turps and brushes have arrived from Jerry's Artarama! My Santa Fe show is scheduled for May 22, 2009, but photography of the larger paintings needs to be done in January in order to meet advertising schedules -- and the work will be delivered to McLarry Gallery at the end of March, early April for pre-sale. In the meantime I will try to add to this web log two or three times a week in order to post my progress -- or the lack of it. I've enjoyed doing this painting -- this is one of my favorite places on the High Road -- Looking off in the distance (in real life) one can see Jicarita Peak -- and these trees seem to stand sentinel for that sacred place.

8/1/08 -"MADRUGADA DE PICURIS" -- Morning trees at Picuris Pueblo -- This painting has such a calm to it -- such a quiet peaceful feeling, I am considering eliminating the pinon in the foreground to uncomplicate the composition and just let it BE! DC

The sky is completed - there are pink and yellow sunrise tones in the sky - hoping this part of the painting will inform the light on the trees and foreground. On a canvas this size everything is a SURPRISE! This canvas has the feeling to me that it is painting itself ..... in my vocabulary, it's called "a little magic". DC

7/23/08 -- It seems as though I have been staring at this underpainting for months, perhaps longer. These trees are on Picuris Pueblo land at the turn off to Truchas. They've always symbolized something really peaceful and solid for me.....I guess I've hesitated because I hope so much to do them justice. Have been working on the glazes for a week or two and will post them as soon as this second phase of the painting is complete. DC
