"TAOS AFTERNOON MOON" - WORK IN PROGRESS

About a week ago I posted a photo of the underpainting of this work -- This post shows you the second phase of this process -- laying in the darkest darks -- the glazes. Glazes are transparent or semi-transparent colors -- the light is still refracted through these colors from the underpainting, giving the paint "life". Instead of black, two of my favorite mixtures are Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna and sometimes I add Alizarin Crimson to this mix. Another of my favorite "warm" dark color mixtures is Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Coming soon: the middle tones and final highlights. 15"x30" Oil on Canvas -Blocked this painting in late last night -- to make the "oil sketch" I mixed oil pigments with MG Fast Drying White and Turpentine. Work fast and loose -- this stage of the painting is only a "road map" -- Keep coming back!

In the studio - getting ready for some winter work -- Mix gesso (usually acrylic) with Payne's Gray acrylic paint - thin with water to a consistency that will not leave heavy brushstrokes on the canvases -- let dry for a few days before applying paint.
