BLANK IS THE BEGINNING
BLANK IS THE END, AND BLANK IS THE BEGINNING - After completing the paintings for my Santa Fe exhibit, a lot of catch up work on the house, including a spring cleaning for the studio. I looked at that blank canvas on the easel today and thought it would be wonderful if I could start out everyday with a symbolically blank canvas in my head -- no complaints, no judgments -- perhaps that would qualify me for sainthood! New underpaintings with color descriptions to be posted here in the next couple of days. DC

A Mayordomo is the official elected to maintain the irrigation system known as the Acequia Madre -- centuries old "Mother Ditches" that bring water from the mountains to the villages here in northern New Mexico. He oversees the spring cleaning of the ditches (as seen in the painting) and manages control of the water to ranches and fields. The original painting "Mayordomo" was completed as an homage to my first Truchas friend, the local Mayordomo, Cosme Romero. I was living at the ranch on Llano Quemado on the outskirts of Truchas. One day Cosme brought his wife, Carmelita, and his daughter, Susie, to welcome me to the community. He was a kind and gracious man with a wonderful sense of humor.

"DON EUSAVIO'S PARADISE" - My Truchas neighbor, Don Eusavio, bringing his wood in for the day -- every morning he would hammer away at some project in his barn, when the apricots were ripe he would don his orange baseball cap and he would climb the tree to fill his little green bucket. Spring ,summer, fall and winter - each season fell into the other; just observing Don Eusavio's quiet routines taught me a new way to live -- Now available as a Studio Edition Print - visit THE HIGH ROAD PRINT CATALOGUE at my website (click the above link). "SUNSET DREAMING" - NEW Original Oil Painting
This is the winter view from my kitchen window -- looking toward the Pecos Wilderness -- at sunset, after a snowstorm. This window never disappoints and never fails to surprise -- Ah, the wonders I have seen! Whooping Cranes, wild snowstorms, forest fires, raging thunderstorms, little grey rabbits, hordes of magpies and the other day a happy trio of wild geese. Have been looking through this window for almost 20 years while doing the dishes, and I don't think any photo or painting can ever do it justice -- it's just a place that one grows to love. With this canvas my May exhibit in Santa Fe is completed. Planning to get dressed in my best blue jeans and take a truck ride into the big city with all my new work on Wednesday. Wish me luck!
Best regards, Donna

VIEW FROM MY TAOS WINDOW
26 January 2009 -- Good Morning from Taos! -- This is the view from my kitchen window -- I have looked at this scene for almost twenty years now and it never appears quite the same. Some years ago my neighbor built a pond in front of his barn and every so often a pair of whooping cranes just fly by to my great delight! This week I am really busy blocking in new paintings for my May exhibit -- will resume posts and auctions next week. Stay tuned. DC

WINTER GIFTS
FELICIDADES A TODOS! Am headed into my comfy cave for a long winter's nap -- will resume posts and e.mails December 29th.....best wishes to all, Donna.
There is nothing I can give you which you have not;
But there is much, very much that while I cannot give it,
you can take.
No heaven can come to us unless our hearts
find rest in today. TAKE HEAVEN.
No peace lies in the future which is not hidden
in this present moment. TAKE PEACE.
The gloom of the world is but a shadow.
Behind it, yet wihtin reach is joy.
There is a radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see,
and to see we have only to look. I BESEECH YOU TO LOOK.
Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by
their covering, cast them away as ugly, or heavy or hard.
Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it a
a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power.
Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that
brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or
a duty, believe me that angel's hand is there; the gift is there,
and the wonder of an overshadowing presence.
Our joys, too; be not content with them as joys.
They, too, conceal diviner gifts.
And so, at this time, I greet you.
Not quite as the world sends greetings, but with
profound esteem and with the prayer that for you now and
forever, the day breaks, and the shadows flee away.

"NESTLED IN" -- 28"x22" New Original Painting
"NESTLED IN" - 28"X22" New Original Oil Painting on Fine Belgian Linen, framed in gold with Linen Liner. One of the things I truly love about painting is the freedom I have to create my own reality-- to change an image -- "pentimento" -- to paint over what I thought was good two days or two weeks ago. Am almost embarrassed that I looked at siesta in grey for almost three years before it became "Siesta in Red" (see blog archived photo July 21st at http://donnaclair.blogspot.com). It finally became the painting I always hoped it could be.
Several weeks ago I did a small (14"x11") canvas called "Nestled In" -- about ten days ago I saw the basic image in a whole different light....I wanted to try to add an early moonrise -- and the lights on in the little adobe house where the nestlers would be making tortillas for dinner. Here it is.......My enhanced version of "NESTLED IN" -- 28"X22" - Original Oil on Fine Belgian Linen, framed in gold with linen liner.....For price and availability, please call my Taos Studio at (575) 758-7454. Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express are available for your convenience.
